To say I’ve had setbacks personally and professionally is an understatement. I’ve been knocked down, kicked around, and dealt some major blows. Sometimes those blows were so severe, that I even questioned who I was and if I had the drive and determination to keep going.
Eventually I got over them though. Sure, some of the setbacks hit me harder than others, but that’s life.
Adjust your mindset for the unexpected…
It’s a crucial mindset shift but one you need to go ahead and make now. Setbacks and challenges are not going to go away. If you accept that, you cut your recovery time in half.
So how do you do that? How do you prepare for what comes next, the good and the bad? For starters, commit to rolling with the punches. I know that is easier said than done but it is necessary. Also, don’t spend too much time complaining and wishing that things were different. It won’t benefit you at all.
Putting it together…
What does the mind shift look like and how does it play out? When things don’t go your way, instead of getting angry and frustrated, accept it for what it is and don’t stress over things you cannot control.
And sometimes it’s not people…
We need to just accept that our idea of the way the world should work isn’t the way the world actually works. It doesn’t always have to be a person causing the problem. It could be one of the many other things that we deal with on a daily basis…the coffee maker, traffic, our computer, our car, etc.
Repeat after me: these things happen. The best thing we can all do is accept that we will have setbacks, failures and disappointments, so when they do happen, we can pivot, adjust and move on quickly.
